Very special honour

Sr Marie Bernarde Jean-Louis was invited by former students to Kimberley to a “Find and Thank your Leaders” celebration honouring her and Brother Donald Madden (CBC).
Sr Marie Bernarde was principal of the girls’ school (1982-1985), Br Madden of the boys’ school (St Boniface in Galeshewe, Kimberley.) The celebration also honoured Br Madden on his 90th birthday.
Professionally their former students have gone a long way, far from the dusty streets of Galeshewe, making their own mark on South African society, and their own contribution to the next generation.
After a period of teaching in KwaZulu Natal Sr Marie Bernarde returned to work for the Northern Cape Education Department and then at the Maths and Science Leadership Academy in Kimberley helping to provide skills to students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
She retired from MLSA in 2019, and currently lives at Villa Siena in Pietermaritzburg.
Oakford Sisters served in Kimberley at “St Boniface” from 1928 till 2013.
