Sr Helen-Veronica (Congregational Councillor for South Africa) joined the Ekukhanyeni/Oaklands community to celebrate the birthdays of Sr Michaela Schäpermeier (85 years on March 17) and Sr Natalie Schlegel (80 years on April 25) at Mass and a special birthday lunch.Because of continuing Covid restrictions the guest list could not be extended.

Sisters Michaela and Natalie have served the Oakford Congregation over many years in their capacity as professional nurses in the different communities in which they have lived and worked.

They continue even in their retirement years to render oversight service to the “Ekukhanyeni AIDS Centre” which operates as a step-down facility from Osindisweni hospital for patients in need of care and treatment for AIDS-related sicknesses until such time as they can be discharged.

The day to day running of the hospice is undertaken by a lay staff nurse and carers, and by domestic staff taking care of the cooking, cleaning, laundry and garden services at the hospice.
