Awards and an anniversary
The Convent School of “Our Lady of Natal” (OLON) at the Bluff (Durban, South Africa), which celebrated its 60th anniversary this year, has received two awards. It was awarded first prize for best education and first prize for best private primary school by the “Best of Bluff Reader's Choice Awards 2024”.
At the Convent School of “Our Lady of Natal”, children are introduced to computers as early as preschool age. This helps to develop their senses, coordination and concentration. In addition, the school works with parents to offer weekend and holiday sports programs that promote holistic development. An integral part of the junior primary school is reading and writing stories.
During the 60th anniversary celebration, there were various events for the children for a week, such as special assemblies and dress-ups where each child came as a famous cartoon character.
On 16 August 2024, a festive service was celebrated in the parish church. The children, aged between six and ten, performed a symbolic liturgical dance during the offertory procession.
Afterwards, the guests celebrated with former headmistresses and teachers and all the sisters from Bluff. The keynote address was given by a former student who is now a medical doctor. Many of the former students are now class representatives and head girls at their various high schools. Many have embarked on a successful professional career.
A highlight of the celebration was when Sr Marie-Ann, who still teaches religion in all grades at the school, cut the celebratory cake. To mark the 60th anniversary, a flower bed with “60” was planted in the school garden.
