For the 473rd transport of the association "Werke statt Worte" e. V. (Works instead of Words), a good 20 volunteers met at the convent in Neustadt at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, 6 July.

For two hours they loaded the remaining furniture from St. Joseph's Mission House into a large lorry which set off for Vukovar in eastern Croatia on the border with Serbia to reach there before the end of July.

Members of the volunteer fire brigades from Neustadt and Erlach, former and current employees of the convent and volunteers from the communities of Neustadt/Erlach and Hafenlohr lent a hand with the loading.

Seven nursing beds and their bedside tables, more than 100 chairs, ten tables, a commode, a walker and a wheelchair and other well-preserved furniture that was still available in the convent were loaded for transport, as well as crockery and glasses. The furniture and objects will now go to homes for the elderly in and around Vukovar and help to supplement and improve the equipment  available in the facilities there.

Karin Lipinski, who works in the municipal administration in Hafenlohr, organised the transport after having been contacted by Petra Weiser, a former housekeeper at the convent in Neustadt.

At the end of March this year, the staff of the convent in Neustadt had already loaded towels, bed linen and small items that had not found a buyer at the house flea market in mid-March onto a small van to help people who needed them.

"A heartfelt thank you to all the helpers who supported us and helped us to be able to support these good causes," said Sr Christiane Sartorius OP.

In this way, the things that could not be sold at the house flea market are now serving a good purpose and do not simply end up in the rubbish container.
