The gift of a sheep!

St Mary’s church in Pietermaritzburg saw parishioners and friends join Oakford Sisters in the celebration of the diamond jubilee of Sisters Catherine Madlala and Immaculata Ngubane.

Fr Martin Badenhorst OP was the celebrant and preacher at Mass, and the Catholic Women’s League laid on lunch and refreshments afterwards.

Sr Catherine continues to invest energy in the garden, producing various vegetables for use in the kitchen at Villa Assumpta. In earlier years she ran various kitchens, including that at Oakford Priory.

She was also involved in pastoral work in different parishes. She is resident at Villa Assumpta retirement home established by the Oakford Sisters over 70 years ago, but now under the management of MOWANA (organisation providing senior living in the Midlands of KwaZulu/Natal).

One gift received by Sr Catherine was a live sheep which will return to Villa Assumpta ready for the kitchen once it has been slaughtered.

Sr Immaculata lives at Ekukhanyeni Mission where she supervises the convent kitchen.  Previously she was involved in various aspects of pastoral ministry and spiritual direction on seminarians.
