Mourning the death of Sr Generosa Masondo OP
It is my Father’s will that whoever sees the Son
and believes in him should have eternal life,
and that I should raise her up on the last day. (Jn 6: 40)
Oakford Dominican Sr Generosa Masondo who died at the end of February at St Rose’s Convent, Ekukhanyeni, was buried on 3 March 2023 among the Dominican Sisters of Montebello in their cemetery.
It is not possible to have Sisters buried at Oakford itself which no longer belongs to the Congregation.
Most Oakford Sisters in South Africa have expressed their wish to be cremated and have their ashes interred at Villa Assumpta beneath the memorial wall blessed in 2012.
However, a small number of Sisters has requested burial and the Montebello Sisters have graciously accepted the Oakford request to have Sisters buried at Montebello.
Our Lady of Good Help Parish in Verulam, near Oakford, organised a well-attended memorial service on 1 March. The parish priest spoke movingly of his personal sense of loss that the parish had lost so unexpectedly the coordinator of the parish catechetical programme, and a well-loved Sister. In tributes to Sr Generosa people spoke of her commitment and hard work, of her accompanying different people on their journey through life, of her joy and laughter.
A beautiful Mass concelebrated by nine priests and two deacons was attended by about 150 people including Montebello and Oakford Sisters, parishioners from Verulam, family members and former colleagues from dioceses where Sr Generosa had worked previously.
After the burial mourners were invited to lunch.
May the Lord whom she served so generously now welcome her into the place prepared for he in the Kingdom of Heaven.
