Congratulations, Sr Natalie
Fr. Dlamini, the pastor in Ekukhanyeni, presented her with a live chicken as a congratulatory gift, in accordance with local custom.
Sr Natalie Schlegel, OP, celebrated her 85th birthday on April 25th—an occasion marked by deep gratitude and great appreciation.
She was born on April 25th, 1941, in Richelbach in the Miltenberg district of Lower Franconia (Bavaria, Germany). On January 15th, 1960, she entered the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Oakford in Neustadt. Just two years later, on March 1st, 1962, her path led her to the mission in South Africa—a step that would shape her entire life.
As a certified and experienced nurse, Sr Natalie always put her skills at the service of the poor and needy. She worked with great dedication in South Africa, interrupted by a few years in Argentina.
Her birthday was celebrated in a special way: Frater Dlamini, the pastor of Ekukhanyeni, surprised her with a live chicken in accordance with local tradition—a gift full of cultural significance and warmth. Loving tokens of affection also came from the parish in Phoenix: Ronel Bolton had baked a birthday cake especially for her.
Although Sr. Natalie has long since reached retirement age, her work continues to make a difference. She remains present in the small community of Ekukhanyeni as well as at the AIDS hospice.
Even though she is no longer formally scheduled for regular nursing duty, she accompanies the patients with great devotion. Where physical therapy is lacking, she offers her time, movement, and creativity—through gymnastic exercises and small creative activities that strengthen both body and soul.
Sr Natalie is an impressive witness to love in action. Her life speaks of courage, perseverance, and deep trust—and of how much a single person can accomplish when they devote themselves entirely to the service of others. May she continue to enjoy good health, strength, and many moments of joy. She stands as a representative of all our Sisters in ministry.
