Sr. Gladys Echenique OP, Oakford Dominican Sister and born in Argentina, has been the coordinator of the Hispanic Ministry of the Diocese of Tucson/Arizona (USA) for six years. In her ministry, she supports and encourages many people to be trained as catechists and leaders to support and accompany the Spanish-speaking members of the diocese.

The Oakford Outreach Project Fund supports Sr. Gladys

In July 2020, Sr. Gladys received a grant for Zoom Licenses from the Oakford Outreach Project Fund. In times of Corona, Zoom enables teachers to share their topics and presentations in virtual form from the office of the Hispanic Ministry in the Diocese of Tucson with the Spanish-speaking people.

A community even in times of the pandemic

In this way, even in times of the Corona pandemic, it is possible to build a common future together that is based on trust, solidarity and community - especially with the weakest on the periphery of our society. “This opportunity to learn our faith together invites us to see ourselves as an evangelizing fellowship across the Diocese of Tucson,” says Sr. Gladys. "I am very grateful for this opportunity to live my own baptismal call as a religious in the Church."

From January to May 2021, virtual presentations from the Hispanic Ministry of the Diocese of Tucson are planned under the title, "Living Our Baptismal Call" – ‘We are looking for ways to ensure that parish ministries remain strong, safe, healthy and available as we begin 2021’. These virtual presentations are aimed at those who are already in the ministry (catechesis) and those who have a desire to grow in their Catholic faith.

The following are the themes presented in virtual form by Sr Gladys and her colleagues:

Strengthening our Spirituality: We must never lose sight of the fact that there are things that are more important than others that we must prioritise in order for our lives to have meaning.

The Letters of St Paul: Getting to know, read and meditate on the core ideas of the letters of St Paul so that they can come to life in our lives.

The Liturgy: The Second Vatican Council reminded us that liturgical acts of the Church belong to and concern all the people of God.

Christology und Mariology: Christology and Mariology form the basis for the central content of the Christian faith: the confession of faith in Jesus as Christ.

Understanding the Church as the People of God: The image of the people of God brings a number of valuable perspectives to the doctrine about the Church. It incorporates the historicity of the church as an essential element in understanding its nature and mission.

Leadership as a call to get involved: How can we accept the call the Church makes to us? To become part of this call one must take responsibility and become real leaders who are able to take the gospel message powerfully to every person and place.

The Social Teaching of the Church: The Church's social teaching is rich in wisdom on how to build a just society and to live a life of holiness amid the challenges of modern society.
